As many of you know, one of our favourite restaurants back home is the
“Schnitzel Haus” located in a secret location I can not reveal here since it is
becoming much too popular and if you don't have reservations you're lucky to get
in lately...
So, while in Vienna, we decided to see just how close the “real thing” compared to our “real thing” back home!
To our dismay, there is nothing known as Jagerschnitzel or hunters schnitzel loosely translated – at least not in this region of Austria. Luckily though, we did find a equivalent in a pub in the heart of old Vienna which had the same dish masquerading under the name of: Purstner. It was delicious, but Matthew and I underestimated the SIZE of the main courses – in fact, we could have ordered one between us!
Here's the brief over view (with no shame pictures I might add! You'd be surprised at how many weird looks you get for taking pictures of food… )
Beverages:
Matt - Some Austrian Beer (which he can't remember the name of)
Me - Local Sparkling Wine (Brut) called Henkell on the menu (but I think it may have been the company)
Starters:
Fried Camembert with Lingonberry Sauce and Salad
Traditional Vienna Beef Broth Soup with Egg Noodles
Mains:
"Ratsherrnpfanne" - Pan-fried Pork Loin with a Mushroom Cream Sauce served with Spaetzle
"Fuhrwerkerpfanne" - Pan-fried Pork Loin in a Gorgonzola Sauce served with Spinach Spaetzle
Dessert: (Since Matt had to fit something sweet in!)
Apfelstrudel – Served warm with a nice chewy inside with crunchy apples and a crispy sugared outside – definitely better than the one had in Munich! So much so, that we didn't remember to take a picture before it was looooong gone.
