La Prosciutteria - "Happy Porker Indeed!!"

La Prosciutteria was our best meal out in Florence for several reasons:

1. It was DELICIOUS - and I am not a meat lover
2. It had this AMAZING wine
3. It was CHEAP food and wine
4. It was FRIENDLY and they treated us the same as their local customers

Here's a few more pictures and a little more detail on my #1 place in Europe for a night out!

Meat Lovers - this is your place!
Wine Lovers - this is your place!
Naturally, Matt and I both had reasons for loving this European bar..

The place is an alley-like establishment with half of the width being allocated to the meat/cheese and food prep counter, and the other side being cramped seating - but it lends the bar a comfy, homey atmosphere, so long as you can ignore the large hunches of meat hanging over your head (over head storage of meat is also over the seating area) with little white drip cups to prevent anything from dripping on your head....

View up towards the ceiling
The reason why it's called a bar is that they don't have a restaurant licence (do to the higher costs and taxes associated with full service restaurants in Florence) and therefore, you order, pick up, and stack your dishes all at the bar... the menus can't be on the tables either - and no metal cutlery either apparently!

Towards the front, near the front window - they keep carving stations for the various smoked/cured meats - what was interesting, is that many of them (and there was horse meat hanging) still have a hoof attached...

Maybe not a picture for the vegetarians out there....

But on to the delicious stuff right?

We started with some wine - a  "Super Tuscan" which I had recently been introduced to.. which are now cemented as some of my favourite blends! (Thank you Laura!!). All of the wines sold here are local, and I didn't see any labels on them which meant that they were exported... such a pity. If I had been coming straight back to Canada - I would have found some way to get a bottle or twelve home!

The best part, these wines (in a bar) were only 10 Euros (approximately $13 CAD) - Bring on the vino!

Next up: FOOD!

The cheese was wonderful - several different kinds, including a particularly aged one with a drizzle of honey. It wasn't hard enough to be a Parmesan or Asiago, but it was sooo good. The meat, while fatty - as the usual way in Europe - was delicious with different spices or just smoked or cured to let the natural flavours come out.... ah.. so good!

Our dinner spread
And yes, we'd been nursing a bottle of wine while they filled the order - maybe you can tell??
This place was amazing and I can safely say that it was the best dinner out we had... it was delicious enough to satisfy your cravings and cheap enough that you rested easy after you walked away from the front door.

This was my favourite night out during the whole trip based on the over all experience and expense!
