Ok.. so the French didn't always surrender!

One thing the French are known for... well, on a positive topic, what they are known for is their commitment and love of food. Even in the 17th and 18th centuries other royal families, such as the British and the Austrians, were serving not their own local cuisines - but French during their formal state dinners.

So.. forward to present day - Matthew and I found ourselves on a TGV train from Geneva to Paris which we sat in first class... and our tickets apparently included dinner.... on a train.... which is a lot like a plane......

The fact that dinner was included was a surprise to us - so really we were still grasping at the idea of "free" food when we were asked what we'd have...

The choices were Salmon (Matt) and Duck (Me) <-- although we shared the meals.

The first thing which was easily apparent was that our dinners were not hot, not even warm... in fact - they were cold. I suppose the French train chefs saw at what a dismal failure hot dinners were on planes and decided that if you couldn't do something right, just don't do it at all. So - they didn't.

Both our dinners were cold, but they were delicious. I think I enjoyed the duck meal more than Matt enjoyed his Salmon, although he wasn't raving about his share of the duck either - I think he was too put off by the cold dinner wildcard.

The duck was chilled, but really good! It came with a cold lima bean salad and goat's cheese with a piece of cured beef. I also had a slice of brie, a fresh baked bun, potatoes and pickled beets with chocolate mouse for dessert. Yup. Perfect. Just what I love!

Both our meals came with wine, water, and coffee (a small fortune in Europe normally)

Matt's meal was very different:

He had a Salmon Pate with veggies that came with a couscous salad and some green sugar peas.. followed by a Salmon Salad with pink grapefruit chunks and a flat bread to put it all on. Then he also got brie and the fresh bun... but he got different dessert - fruit tart with a fruit filled sponge cake...

Matt even left the wrappers and the stickers on before taking the photo so you could get the true sense of the "in transit" meal...

All in all, EASILY the best plane or train or automobile meal I've ever had! And Matt had to agree too even though he didn't love it as much.
